Sometimes
we forget how much time the layers of history have buried us in. Even in the
days of King Josiah, the years weighed heavily on Israel. To him Solomon’s
empire was a more distant recollection than our memories of the British
redcoats as they patrolled the streets of Boston. And the days of the old
tribes as they gathered kingless to fight against the Philistines? A mere
legend, as far removed from his time as the days of Elizabethan England from
our own.
Cultures
crash against the beaches of time like endless waves, but erosion works ever so
slowly.
